African American Heritage Museum of Southern NJ

“Stereotypes” — a permanent exhibit — is an important exhibit for young people to see. It is instructive about an era they never experienced, yet it shows how the mass marketing of negative imagery affected generations of African Americans with repercussion that continue today.

Through many of the museum’s limited showings, AAHMSNJ shines a light on local artists whose extraordinary work may otherwise go unseen. New Jersey’s African American artist community is vibrant and rich. The AAHMSNJ is one of the few places talented painters, sculptors, photographers, quilters and more can get hands-on gallery display experience, and the attention and recognition they deserve.

The museum’s gift shop sells unique African American-centric items and supports local artists as well as museum operations.

AAHMSNJ’s second location is in the Dr. Martin Luther King Center, 661 Jackson Road in Newtonville, NJ.

Their Traveling Museum is available for schools, community groups and corporate exhibits.
